Kazakhstan Joins Global Effort to Enhance International Humanitarian Law
Kazakhstan, Brazil, China, France, Jordan, and South Africa have come together with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to launch a global initiative aimed at enhancing political commitment to international humanitarian law (IHL). The initiative, which was unveiled at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Sept. 27, seeks to promote respect, protection, and compliance with the Geneva Conventions in order to alleviate the impact of armed conflicts, minimize civilian suffering, and safeguard civilian infrastructure.
This collaborative effort is open to the participation of all nations, with the goal of renewing dedication to the universal and faithful application of the Geneva Conventions. To achieve this, the founding countries have requested the ICRC to engage in consultations with various stakeholders in order to develop practical recommendations. These recommendations will then be presented and approved at a Global Summit to Uphold Humanity in War, scheduled to take place in 2026.
The Geneva Conventions of 1949 serve as the cornerstone of international humanitarian law, setting forth regulations for the protection of individuals affected by armed conflicts. By joining forces through this initiative, Kazakhstan, Brazil, China, France, Jordan, and South Africa are demonstrating their commitment to upholding the principles of humanitarian law and working towards a more peaceful and just world.
