Kazakhstan Leads Environmental Security Discussion at SCO Roundtable in Nairobi
ASTANA – The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretariat recently convened a roundtable discussion on environmental security in Nairobi, Kenya under Kazakhstan’s chairmanship. The event, organized by the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan as part of the 2024 Year of Ecology, took place on Feb. 26 and aimed to address key issues related to environmental protection and conservation.
During the meeting, SCO Secretary-General Zhang Min and Inger Andersen, the executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation on areas such as biodiversity conservation, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and ecotourism. The agreement also includes provisions for scientific and technical partnership, environmental pollution reduction, and the promotion of sustainable development.
Participants discussed the current state of ecology and environmental protection in SCO member states, highlighting the need for stronger multilateral cooperation to address emerging challenges and threats to environmental security. The roundtable stressed the importance of expanding SCO collaboration in these areas to foster sustainable development and environmental resilience.
