May 1: Kazakhstan Celebrates Day of Unity
ASTANA—On May 1, Kazakhstan celebrates the Day of Unity. This holiday has been observed since 1996, aiming to highlight peace and harmony among the country’s diverse ethnic groups. It symbolizes the unity and solidarity of the Kazakh people, regardless of their ethnic, religious, or cultural backgrounds.
More than 130 ethnic groups now reside in Kazakhstan, with many of them being deported to the country during the Stalinist repressions in the 20th century. Kazakhstan has become a home for various ethnicities, including Germans, Koreans, Chechens, and Ingush.
The Day of Unity is an official holiday with festivities taking place across all regions of the nation. People gather in squares, enjoy music, dance, and indulge in delicious food as part of the celebrations.
Leading up to May 1, various events have been organized to mark the occasion. Nearly 15,000 individuals participated in a Marathon of Unity across 15 regions on April 28. Additionally, the Presidential Center in Astana unveiled an exhibition featuring over 200 museum items related to the holiday.
In Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, a series of festive events will commence early in the morning. The Assembly of People of Kazakhstan will honor volunteers and active citizens who have assisted in collecting and delivering humanitarian aid to those affected by floods.
The Day of Unity will also feature a concert program showcasing popular bands and ethno-cultural associations. A charity fair and gastro festival will be held at the Palace of the Republic, offering a variety of cuisines from different cultures. The proceeds from the event will support efforts to address the aftermath of the floods.
While this year’s celebrations may be subdued due to ongoing flood relief efforts, the Day of Unity serves as a reminder of the nation’s strength and unity in times of hardship. Larisa Kalkova, head of the Polonez Regional Center of Polish Language and Culture, emphasized the importance of unity and compassion towards others, regardless of their background.
As Kazakhstan commemorates the Day of Unity, it reflects on the centuries-old history of the country, emphasizing the value of respecting and loving one’s neighbors. The Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, now in its 29th anniversary year, plays a crucial role in uniting ethnic groups and fostering a sense of unity among all residents.
