Mukhtar Magauin: Celebrating the Legacy of a Renowned Kazakh Historian and Writer
On Feb. 2, Kazakhstan marks the 85th birthday of Mukhtar Magauin, a prolific historian and writer dedicated to revealing the reality of history through the lens of artistic truth. Despite his passing on Jan. 10, just three weeks before his birthday, Magauin’s impact on Kazakh literature and history remains profound.
Born in 1940 in the village of Barshatas in the East Kazakhstan Region, Magauin began his literary journey after earning a degree in philology from what is now Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. He held various positions throughout his career, including as head of the literary criticism department at the Kazakh Adebieti newspaper and as a senior researcher at the Mukhtar Auezov Institute of Literature and Art.
Magauin’s literary works are revered in Kazakhstan and beyond. His renowned novel “Alasapyran” delves into the life and fate of Oraz-Muhamed Sultan, a historical figure set against the backdrop of dramatic events in Russian and Kazakh society. This novel, along with his series of books on the Kazakh Khanate era, solidified Magauin’s reputation as a master storyteller and historian.
In addition to his writing, Magauin was also a talented translator, bringing works by foreign authors into Kazakh and enriching the literary landscape of the country. His contributions were recognized with accolades such as the People’s Writer of Kazakhstan title and an international award for services to the Turkic World.
Despite living abroad in the United States for nearly 18 years, Magauin remained deeply connected to his homeland. His passing elicited condolences from Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who praised Magauin as an “outstanding master of words” whose works will forever leave a lasting impact on the people of Kazakhstan.
