Kazakhstan Plans to Enhance Transport Infrastructure for Improved Connectivity
Kazakhstan is gearing up for a major infrastructure overhaul this year, with plans to construct new airports in popular resort areas, invest heavily in new highways, and boost freight traffic along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), also known as the Middle Corridor.
In the aviation sector, Kazakhstan is moving forward with crucial infrastructure projects by building new airports in key locations such as Katon-Karagai National Park resort areas, Zaisan in the East Kazakhstan Region, and Quirky in the Mangystau Region. Land plots are being formalized and design work is already underway for these facilities.
On the highways front, Kazakhstan is set to embark on a large-scale project to enhance its transport infrastructure by 2030, with plans to construct 4,700 kilometers of new roads. The total investment for these projects is estimated at over 9 trillion tenge (US$17.1 billion), with efforts in place to attract investors to the initiatives.
Railway and water transport are also undergoing significant upgrades in Kazakhstan, including the acquisition of 225 new railcars and the completion of railway work under the Dostyk-Moiynty projects. These improvements will increase throughput capacity and ensure the smooth movement of trains in key areas.
Furthermore, Kazakhstan is focusing on developing sea transport capabilities, with a container hub being developed at the Aktau port to increase throughput capacity to 240,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) annually. This expansion will bolster Kazakhstan’s role in international logistics, enhance container traffic along the TITR through Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye, and redirect transit freight from China to Europe.
Overall, these initiatives highlight Kazakhstan’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and improving connectivity within the region, setting the stage for economic growth and development in the years to come.
