Kazakhstan Ranks 67th in Human Development According to UNDP Report
Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, has made significant strides in human development, ranking 67th out of 193 countries and territories worldwide in the latest United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report released on March 13. The report places Kazakhstan comfortably in the “Very High” human development category, with a Human Development Index (HDI) value of 0.802 in 2022, showing a remarkable 19.3% increase from its 1990 value.
The country has seen improvements in key metrics such as life expectancy, education, and Gross National Income (GNI) per capita. However, gender disparities still exist, as highlighted by the Gender Development Index (GDI), with females slightly trailing males. The report also emphasizes the importance of addressing inequality and social norms, as evident from the Inequality-adjusted HDI (IHDI) figure, which diminishes the HDI by 8.5% in Kazakhstan.
Further analysis includes insights from the Gender Inequality Index (GII) and Gender Social Norms Index (GSNI), which point to challenges in reproductive health, women’s empowerment, and labor market participation. Efforts to combat multidimensional poverty and mitigate planetary pressures are also crucial to ensuring holistic development and environmental sustainability in the country.
The UNDP report titled “Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarized World” sheds light on global challenges related to uneven progress, exacerbated inequalities, and political polarization. As Kazakhstan continues on its development pathway, efforts to address these challenges and promote inclusive policies will be essential for sustained progress and well-being across society.
