Kazakhstan Sends AZAL Aircraft Black Boxes to Brazil for Decoding
The black boxes of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed near Aktau on Dec. 25 will be sent to Brazil for decoding, according to the Kazakh Transport Ministry. This decision was made in accordance with Annex 13 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, which outlines the procedures for investigating air accidents.
Kazakhstan, being a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and a signatory to this convention, has the responsibility to ensure a thorough investigation of the crash. After consultations with aviation authorities from Azerbaijan and Russia, it was decided to send the flight recorders to the Aviation Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA) in Brazil.
CENIPA has the necessary technical expertise, equipment, and certified laboratory to read the black boxes. Azerbaijani experts will also participate in the decoding process in Brazil, as stated by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Digital Development and Transport.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has directed a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the incident, emphasizing the importance of transparency in the investigative process. He also awarded Kazakh citizens for their bravery, professionalism, and civic responsibility in rescuing passengers from the crashed plane.
The tragic crash resulted in the loss of 38 lives and left 29 people injured, including three children. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev commended the solidarity and compassion shown by Kazakh citizens in the aftermath of the accident. The international community awaits the findings of the investigation to shed light on the causes of this unfortunate event.
