ASTANA — In a remarkable achievement, Ramazan Butantayev, a student from the specialized IT lyceum in Kazakhstan’s Mangystau Region, clinched the gold medal at the Asia-Pacific Linguistic Olympiad (APLO) 2025. This year’s competition marked a historic milestone for the Kazakh national team, which collectively won five medals and three certificates of honor, as reported by the Kazakh Ministry of Education on May 5.
The success didn’t stop with Butantayev; fellow team members Amir Sarbasov, Timur Kantayev, ZERE Serikova, and Temirlan Seitbattal also secured medals, showcasing the nation’s linguistic talent on an international stage. Additionally, certificates of honor were earned by Islam Sipattalov, Shyngys Karassayev, and Aron Khassanov.
The APLO, held on April 20, saw the participation of nearly 500 schoolchildren from twelve Asia-Pacific countries, including powerhouses like China, Australia, Japan, and Malaysia. This annual competition serves as a gateway to the International Linguistic Olympiad (IOL), fostering logical thinking, linguistic intuition, and intercultural competence among high school students.
The unprecedented achievement of the Kazakh team at this year’s Olympiad not only highlights their dedication but also enhances the country’s reputation in the field of linguistics.
