Kazakhstani Team Presents Groundbreaking Alem Innovation in Organ Preservation at World Expo 2025
A team of physician-researchers from Kazakhstan’s University Medical Center (UMC), led by renowned cardiac surgeon Yuriy Pya, has unveiled a revolutionary innovation for donor organ preservation and transportation at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. The event, taking place from April 13 to Oct. 13, has showcased the Alem system developed by the team with the support of the Heart Center Foundation.
The Alem system has the capability to preserve donor organs for over 24 hours by creating near-physiological conditions. Through preclinical studies, its effectiveness and safety have been confirmed, leading to the system entering the crucial phase of clinical trials.
This innovative system functions by maintaining body temperature, oxygenating the blood, and continuously monitoring vital parameters in real time. It also presents the opportunity to treat donor organs that would typically be deemed unsuitable for transplantation.
Project leader and UMC CEO Pya expressed, “The system can be used not only for preservation but also for treating donor organs that wouldn’t typically be considered viable for transplantation. We can place such organs in the device and perform treatment to make them transplantable. This greatly expands the possibilities of medicine.”
The development process from concept to a functioning device took several years, showcasing the team’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of medical advancements. According to the developers, technologies like Alem offer new solutions that make cutting-edge medical advancements more accessible to those in need.
“This is a historic moment for Kazakhstan. For the first time, we are presenting a large-scale medical project – Alem – at a global exhibition of this level,” remarked Heart Center Foundation Director Murat Zaurov. “Our goal is not just to showcase our invention to the world, but to become part of global technological and medical progress.”
The Alem system’s debut at the World Expo 2025 highlights Kazakhstan’s contribution to the field of medical innovation and signifies a step towards global recognition and progress in healthcare technology.
