Kazakhstan Signs Agreement for Construction of Kambar-Ata Hydroelectric Power Plant
Energy Ministers of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, and Uzbekistan Sign Agreement for Kambar-Ata-1 Hydroelectric Power Plant Construction
During a special session at the International Energy Investment Forum in Vienna, the energy ministers of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Uzbekistan signed an agreement to prepare for the construction and operation of the Kambar-Ata-1 hydroelectric power plant (HPP). The agreement, reported by the Kazakh Energy Ministry’s press service, outlines preliminary provisions for the project.
The agreement includes establishing a joint-stock company in the Kyrgyz Republic with equity participation from all three countries. The Kyrgyz side will hold 34%, Kazakhstan will hold 33%, and Uzbekistan will hold 33% of the shares. Additionally, there is a guarantee to purchase the generated electricity in quantities determined by the participating states.
The Kambar-Ata-1 HPP will be constructed on the Naryn River in the Kyrgyz Republic. The plant is expected to generate electricity for Central Asian countries and ensure a sustainable water supply for the region.
At the forum, Kazakh Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev held meetings with potential investors for electricity projects in Kazakhstan. He engaged with the President of the Austrian Industries Federation, representatives from Siemens Austria, Gas Connect Austria, and the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group.
Satkaliyev highlighted Kazakhstan’s openness to new strategic energy initiatives and expressed readiness for mutually beneficial cooperation in the energy sector. The signing of the agreement for the Kambar-Ata-1 HPP marks a significant step towards enhancing energy security and sustainability in the region.
