Kazakhstan to Form Nuclear Power Plant Consortium by 2025, President Tokayev Announces

ASTANA – President Tokayev revealed in a recent interview that the participants of the international consortium for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan will be determined by 2025. This announcement follows a national referendum held in October 2024, where the construction of a nuclear power plant was approved.
During discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tokayev proposed the involvement of an international consortium consisting of leading global companies with advanced technologies. The consortium is expected to include Kazakhstan’s entity as the general operator, with potential participation from companies like Rosatom and a Chinese company known for their success in building nuclear facilities.
Competitive procedures for selecting the consortium members will take place this year, leading to a final decision by the government. President Tokayev emphasized the importance of a large-capacity nuclear power plant for Kazakhstan, hinting at the possibility of constructing additional plants in the future. He believes that developing the nuclear energy sector will provide a significant boost to the country’s economy, addressing its energy deficit and unlocking potential opportunities for the future. Kazakhstan aims to become a hub for advanced nuclear technology, tapping into its vast energy potential.
