Kazakhstan to Receive Record 11 Billion Cubic Meters of Water This Spring

Kazakhstan Secures 11 Billion Cubic Meters of Water, Prioritizes Water Diplomacy

ASTANA — Kazakhstan has secured agreements with Central Asian countries to receive 11 billion cubic meters of water by April, as announced by Kazakh Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov at the 88th meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination of Central Asia on Jan. 29 in Dushanbe.

The water will flow into the Shardara Reservoir in the Turkistan Region via the Syr Darya River, with 1.6 billion cubic meters allocated to be sent to the Aral Sea, according to the ministry’s press service.

Nurzhigitov emphasized the higher demand for irrigation in the southern regions during the summer, contrasting with the west and north regions that often experience floods. To address this imbalance, Kazakhstan prioritizes water diplomacy in the south to ensure sustainable water management.

In line with efforts to modernize water management, Kazakhstan plans to develop an information system for water resources by the end of 2025. The system will incorporate detailed data on thousands of rivers, lakes, seas, canals, reservoirs, and dams, creating a single digital platform for water accounting and management.

This digitization initiative aims to increase transparency, efficiency, and provide better forecasts for preventing emergencies. The Information and Analytical Center for Water Resources, a ministry subordinated organization, is actively involved in this work to enhance water resource management in Kazakhstan.
