Kazakhstan’s Advancements in Flood Forecasting Through Digital Tools
Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov is taking proactive steps to enhance flood forecasting and expedite the process of compensating for flood-related damages. In a recent meeting at the Digital Government Office, Bektenov emphasized the importance of utilizing digital tools to improve the monitoring and response to flood situations.
During the meeting, Bektenov directed the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry to utilize CCTV cameras for real-time monitoring of flood control measures and to maintain accurate records. He highlighted the need for high-quality operational information and the use of innovative technologies to make informed management decisions.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of transforming Kazakhstan into an IT-savvy country and expanding the application of digital solutions to other sectors of the economy. He emphasized the significance of data interchange, system integration, and the correct development of tools and information.
Furthermore, the meeting participants discussed a prototype system for modeling floods and forecasting reservoir filling to address the current flood situation in the country. Pilot tests were conducted on various river sections, and algorithms for modeling and calculating drainage were developed as part of the prototype’s progress.
Additionally, the Ministry has developed digital tools to support domestic producers by enabling online monitoring of production enterprises and identifying any infringement of their interests by government agencies. This initiative aims to boost local production growth and decrease the dependence on imports in the national market.
Following expert evaluations of the digital solutions presented, Bektenov approved the projects and instructed the relevant ministry to initiate implementation in a pilot mode. These efforts reflect Kazakhstan’s commitment to leveraging technology for improved flood management and to support the development of domestic industries.
