Kazakhstan’s Ambitious Air Transport Network Expansion Agenda

Kazakhstan is set to significantly expand its aircraft fleet and international routes by 2030, according to Deputy Minister of Transport Talgat Lastayev. Currently operating with a fleet of 104 aircraft and 119 international routes, the country plans to increase these numbers to 221 aircraft and 200 international routes within the next decade.

Kazakh airlines are actively acquiring new aircraft, adding 10-15 new planes each year. In early 2025, two new Airbus A320 NEO airliners were introduced, with an additional 14 expected by the end of the year. This expansion will increase the country’s carrying capacity by 15%, supporting its growing aviation industry.

Development efforts are also underway at regional airports in resort areas such as Katon-Karagay, Zaisan, and Kendirli. These airports are being upgraded to improve accessibility and support tourist destinations. Kazakhstan subsidizes 26 socially significant air routes annually, with a focus on destinations like Aktau, Balkhash, and Turkistan.

Investments in airport infrastructure are a key priority for Kazakhstan, with construction and repair work being carried out at 10 airports last year. Passenger terminals in major cities like Almaty and Shymkent have been modernized, increasing their capacity significantly. The country also plans to enhance six airports to become key air hubs, attracting private investments worth $2.1 billion.

Furthermore, plans are in place to develop Aktau as a multimodal transportation hub, integrating air, road, rail, and sea transportation. The city will also host a technical center for aircraft maintenance and a training facility for aviation specialists, further boosting Kazakhstan’s aviation industry.

Overall, Kazakhstan’s ambitious goals for its aviation sector demonstrate a commitment to growth and development in the coming years. With increased fleet size, expanded routes, and improved infrastructure, the country is poised to enhance its connectivity and position itself as a key player in the global aviation market.
