Kazakhstan’s Efforts to Preserve and Promote National Tazy Dogs
Kazakhstan’s Nomad National Hunting Club has been working diligently for the past 13 years to restore and revive the country’s purebred national Tazy dogs. Established in 2010 by the Federation for the Restoration and Breeding of National and Rare Dog Breeds, the club aims to consolidate the efforts of its members and promote the preservation of this unique breed.
The Tazy dogs have a long history in Kazakhstan and were traditionally used for hunting. However, in the 1990s, their popularity and numbers started to decline, with the breed’s population reducing from over 3,000 dogs in the 1930s to fewer than 300 by the year 2000.
In response to this alarming decline, Kazakhstan took the initiative to bring together like-minded individuals and establish a public association dedicated to increasing the population of purebred Kazakh Tazy dogs. The association’s primary goal is to raise awareness about this dire situation and ensure the restoration and preservation of the national breed for future generations.
Since its inception, the Nomad National Hunting Club has organized numerous events to achieve its mission. These include regional dog shows, exhibitions, and field trials, which have garnered participation from over 100 dog enthusiasts across the country.
In 2014, the club entered its second phase, focusing on strengthening the status of national breeds. With the endorsement of the Agriculture Minister, they established standards and evaluation guidelines for both the Tazy and Tobet breeds. Additionally, they introduced a “regulation on field trials” to further enhance the breed’s preservation efforts.
The third stage of the association’s work is dedicated to promoting national hunting with Kazakh Tazy dogs. This is especially effective when hunters utilize riding horses alongside their Tazys. Hunting with Tazys from horseback is not only crucial for hunting societies but also provides a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience for hunters.
Throughout the years, the club has successfully placed over 400 Tazy puppies with new owners. Currently, their kennel houses more than 10 Kazakh Tazy dogs. The dedication and efforts of the Nomad National Hunting Club have played a vital role in restoring, developing, and preserving the purebred national Tazy dogs of Kazakhstan.
