UN Human Rights Council Adopts Kazakhstan’s Initiative on Quality Education for Peace and Tolerance
On October 11, the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council adopted Kazakhstan’s first initiative on ensuring quality education for peace and tolerance, as reported by the Foreign Ministry’s press service. The resolution, presented by Kazakhstan, aims to promote peace, tolerance, respect for human rights, and fundamental freedoms through children’s education while ensuring their safety in the learning environment.
The document also recognizes the obligation of UN member states to implement non-discrimination and safe access to education for children, especially during armed conflicts. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of measures for the recovery and reintegration of children affected by armed conflict and terrorism, particularly through education.
Kazakhstan’s positive experience in the repatriation and reintegration of children from conflict zones played a significant role in the adoption of this resolution. As a result, the document urges all UN member states to take similar measures in order to support the recovery and reintegration of affected children.
This initiative is notable not only for its content but also for its regional significance. Kazakhstan presented the draft resolution as the first regional initiative, uniting all five countries of Central Asia. By doing so, the country has placed the region on the main UN human rights platform.
Despite the diverse positions of UN member states on human rights, the resolution received broad support, with more than 70 states co-sponsoring it. This support came from a wide range of countries, including China, the United States, African, Asian, European Union (EU), and Latin American countries.
This milestone achievement for Kazakhstan highlights the country’s commitment to promoting peace, tolerance, and quality education for all children. By gaining international recognition and support, Kazakhstan has paved the way for other nations to adopt similar initiatives and contribute to a brighter future for children worldwide.
