Kazakhstan’s Ongoing Efforts to Enhance Seismic Safety
Kazakh Prime Minister Signs Development Plan to Strengthen Seismological Industry
On July 5, Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov signed a comprehensive development plan for the seismological industry for the years 2024-2028. The plan aims to enhance the country’s seismological safety through a series of strategic measures.
One of the key initiatives outlined in the plan is the development of 15 seismic zoning maps, which will enable authorities to predict 70% of earthquake sources in earthquake-prone regions. These maps will serve as the basis for certifying buildings and structures in these areas and for establishing new building standards to improve their resilience to seismic activity.
The plan also includes the installation of 285 new seismic stations and the enhancement of 70 existing stations to provide a more accurate forecast of seismic risks in vulnerable regions such as the Almaty Region. Additionally, the government will strengthen control over building construction and operation, improve monitoring techniques, and equip seismology specialists with modern tools and resources.
By implementing this comprehensive plan, the Kazakh government aims to boost the protection of citizens, structures, and critical infrastructure in earthquake-prone areas across the country. With seismic zones covering approximately 40% of Kazakhstan’s territory, ensuring seismic safety is a top priority for the government.
The signing of this development plan underscores Kazakhstan’s commitment to bolstering its seismological industry and safeguarding its population from the potential risks posed by earthquakes.
