Kazakhstan’s Stance on BRICS Membership Discussed
Kazakhstan Decides Against Joining BRICS, Supports Calls for Fair Global Order
ASTANA – Kazakhstan has announced that it will not be submitting an application to join the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) in the near future. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s spokesperson, Berik Uali, explained in an interview with Tengrinews on Oct. 16 that the country is opting out of the multi-stage membership process due to various factors related to the association’s development.
Uali acknowledged that the President has received proposals regarding Kazakhstan’s potential accession to BRICS, recognizing the country as a responsible and authoritative member of the international community. However, he emphasized that these proposals are currently under careful review to ensure they align with Kazakhstan’s national interests.
While refraining from joining BRICS, Kazakhstan remains interested in the evolution of the association and supports the founding members’ efforts to promote a fair and democratic global order free from the dominance of superpowers. President Tokayev has consistently advocated for the United Nations (UN) as the primary organization for addressing international issues and establishing a just world order.
Tokayev has emphasized the importance of the UN Charter as the foundation of international law, stressing that no country has the right to violate its principles. He has also called for reforms of the UN Security Council that take into account the interests of middle powers through broad consultations among members.
Despite not pursuing BRICS membership, President Tokayev is set to participate in an extended BRICS Summit meeting in Kazan on Oct. 24, in an outreach format. This decision reinforces Kazakhstan’s commitment to engaging with international partners while upholding its national interests and principles of global governance.
