Knife Attack Suspect in Annecy Transferred to Psychiatric Hospital
The suspect of the knife attack in Annecy, France, last week has been transferred to the psychiatric hospital Vinatier in the city of Bron, as reported by the French press. The suspect has been taken to a special unit within the hospital.
The incident took place on the morning of June 8 in Annecy, where a Syrian refugee, who had proclaimed himself to be a Christian, attacked people in a park with a knife, injuring six individuals, including four children. Upon the suspect’s arrest, a gun, two Christian pictures, a cross necklace, 480 euros, and a Swedish driver’s license were found during a body search.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin revealed that the suspect, whose asylum request was granted in Sweden back in 2013, possessed a residence permit in that country. Additionally, the suspect had also sought asylum in both Italy and France, yet his requests were denied.
Annecy Public Prosecutor Line Bonnet-Mathis stated that the injuries sustained by the six victims in last week’s attack were not life-threatening and that four injured children were still receiving treatment. The suspect has been placed in pre-trial detention on charges of “attempted murder.”
Furthermore, due to concerns of potential self-harm, the suspect has been placed in a special cell. The transfer to the psychiatric hospital Vinatier in Bron aims to provide the necessary psychiatric evaluation and support.
The investigation into the knife attack in Annecy is ongoing, as authorities work to uncover the motive behind the incident and gather more details about the suspect’s background and possible associations.
