KTAMS Sets April Hunger Threshold at 29,787 TL

Hunger Limit Set at 29,787 TL for Turkish Cypriot Families

The Turkish Cypriot Public Officers Union (KTAMS) has announced the hunger limit for a family of four, setting it at 29,787 TL as of April 30. This figure reflects the necessary budget for maintaining a healthy diet amid rising living costs.

KTAMS President Güven Bengihan emphasized the importance of this calculation, which was derived from data supplied by the Statistical Institute. He outlined the daily and monthly food expenditure needed for various demographics within the family:

  • Adult Women:
    • Daily: 256.39 TL
    • Monthly: 7,691.70 TL
  • Adult Men:
    • Daily: 266.89 TL
    • Monthly: 8,006.70 TL
  • Children (Ages 15-19):
    • Daily: 281.88 TL
    • Monthly: 8,456.40 TL
  • Children (Ages 4-6):
    • Daily: 187.74 TL
    • Monthly: 5,632.20 TL

Bengihan reiterated that the hunger limit of 29,787 TL is crucial for ensuring balanced and adequate nutrition for a family of four.

In his statement, he also highlighted inflation trends. Official figures from the Statistical Institute indicated a 4.06% inflation rate in April, with a cumulative increase of 13.08% over the first four months of the year.

Bengihan criticized the Consumer Prices Index, which is based on 2015 as the base year, claiming it fails to accurately reflect the real cost of living for residents.

This announcement serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing economic challenges faced by families in Turkish Cyprus, underscoring the need for continued dialogue about wages and living conditions.
