KTOEÖS Criticizes Lack of Teachers in Container Classrooms for Education Start- BRTK

The Turkish Cypriot Secondary Education Teachers’ Union has raised concerns about the new academic year at Lefke Gazi High School, as reported in a recent press statement.

Selma Eylem, the Chairperson of the Union, highlighted the fact that just before the school was set to open, it was discovered that the school building was not earthquake resistant. As a result, students and teachers have been forced to use container classrooms. Eylem emphasized that this situation is far from ideal, with no playgrounds or activity areas for the children.

Furthermore, Eylem expressed worries about the temporary appointment of 53 teachers by the Ministry of Education. She questioned the future of these teachers once their temporary roles expire and raised concerns about the budget for their salaries.

Eylem also pointed out that despite the recent appointments, there is still a shortage of teachers in 10 different subject areas at Lefke Gazi High School. She criticized the lack of focus on the quality of education and accused education policies of being short-sighted and aiming to merely “save the day”.

Tahir Gökçebel, Secretary General of the Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers’ Union, joined in the criticism and slammed the minister for handling problems without proper planning. He described many schools, including Lefke Gazi High School, as being akin to construction sites.

The statements from the Teachers’ Union shed light on the challenges facing educational institutions in Cyprus, urging authorities to prioritize long-term solutions and the well-being of students and teachers alike.
