Turkish Cypriot Secondary Education Teachers’ Union to Protest in 25 Schools Tomorrow

The Turkish Cypriot Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS) has recently announced its plan to stage a protest in 25 schools tomorrow afternoon. Union President Selma Eylem stated that the protest aims to address various issues affecting the education system.

The schools where the protest will take place include Turkish Maarif College, Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School, 20 July Science High School, Atatürk Vocational High School, Haydarpaşa Trade High School, Osman Örek Vocational High School, Atleks Sanverler Secondary School, Hala Sultan Theology College, Esin Leman High School, Famagusta Turkish Maarif College, Namık Kemal High School, Çanakkale Secondary School, Canbulat Freedom Secondary School, Famagusta Vocational High School, Famagusta Trade High School, Doktor Fazıl Küçük Industrial Vocational High School, Cumhuriyet High School, Şehit Zeka Çorba Secondary School, 19 Mayıs Turkish Maarif College, Oğuz Veli Secondary School, Girne Tourism Vocational High School, Karpaz Vocational High School, Güzelyurt Turkish Maarif College, Lefke Gazi High School, and Cengiz Topel Industrial Vocational High School.

President Eylem emphasized that the protest was in response to the inadequate conditions experienced by students, such as hunger, safety risks, and being confined to containers, as well as the lack of proper preparation and organization. He criticized the Ministry for neglecting necessary maintenance, repairs, and strengthening of earthquake-prone schools, instead opting to fill them with containers. Eylem also expressed his dissatisfaction with the Minister’s attempt to shift blame onto teachers, school administrations, and students for the state of collapsed schools.

Eylem declared the union’s commitment to fight against attempts to discredit teachers and their unions, impose unjust policies and regulations, and intimidate teachers with threats. To further voice their concerns, the union plans to gather at their building and hold a march on Thursday, November 9, at 15:00.

These developments highlight the growing discontent within the education sector in Cyprus and the efforts of educators to improve the conditions for both students and teachers.
