“KTÖS and KTOEÖS to Resume Strikes in Nicosia Tomorrow”

Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union (KTÖS) and Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS) protested against the Teachers Amendment Bill in front of the Assembly while it was being discussed in the Administrative, Public and Health Affairs Committee. The two unions argue that the bill targets Atatürk Teachers Academy and teacher rights. They also went on strike between 08:00 and 12:30 at all schools organized by them. Political party representatives and the Trade Union Platform also supported the protest. Even though the Draft Law was approved by the committee, the two unions decided to continue their strikes and protests. They plan to go on strike the next day between 08:00 and 13:00 in all the schools organized by them in Nicosia and Atatürk Teachers Academy. A joint statement by the two unions said, “In our continued struggle, all Nicosia central schools and Atatürk Teachers Academy will be on strike and action tomorrow between 08:00 and 13:00.” Secretary General of Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union, Burak Maviş stated that they would lay a black wreath at the Turkish Embassy in Nicosia and the Prime Ministry as part of their actions.
