President Sadyr Japarov Addresses UN General Assembly on Global Challenges and Sustainable Development
President Sadyr Japarov delivered a powerful speech at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, addressing urgent global challenges and the importance of sustainable development. He began by congratulating Mr. Philemon Yang on his election as President of the 79th session and expressed gratitude to Mr. Dennis Francis for his work in the previous session.
Japarov reaffirmed Kyrgyzstan’s commitment to international law, the UN Charter, and support for the organization’s efforts to promote international security, address social, economic, and climate challenges, and protect human rights.
He emphasized the need for united efforts in the face of modern global challenges such as climate crises, food security threats, and growing inequality. Japarov called on all states to support the UN in maintaining peace and preventing modern risks and threats, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing pressing global issues.
The President highlighted two conflicting realities of our time – the unprecedented increase in global military spending alongside the lack of progress in supporting poor and vulnerable countries. He stressed the need to redirect resources from military needs toward addressing global challenges, supporting vulnerable states, and promoting sustainable development.
Japarov proposed coordinated efforts from both developed and least developed countries, focusing on increasing financial assistance to underfunded nations, promoting infrastructure projects, and transferring modern technologies to aid in independent economic growth.
In addressing climate change, Japarov outlined Kyrgyzstan’s initiatives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, emphasizing the importance of renewable energy sources, sustainable development, and climate resilience. He proposed mechanisms such as debt-for-nature swaps and the establishment of a Climate Trust Fund to fund environmental projects in mountainous regions.
The President highlighted Kyrgyzstan’s active role in regional sustainable development projects, including hydropower plant construction and railway development with neighboring states. He called for a shift in global security priorities towards building a just, safe, and prosperous world for all.
Japarov expressed Kyrgyzstan’s candidacy for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and called for support in the upcoming elections. He emphasized the country’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and highlighted national efforts towards achieving the goals by 2030.
In conclusion, President Sadyr Japarov quoted the epic “Manas,” emphasizing the importance of unity, solidarity, and cooperation in building a strong and bright future. He called for global collaboration to address pressing challenges and create a more stable and sustainable world for future generations.
