Language Preservation: Safeguarding Cultural Identity

Hungarian Language Not Endangered, Says Prime Minister’s Advisor

Katalin Szili, the Prime Minister’s senior advisor, emphasized that the Hungarian language is not an endangered language, thanks to the efforts of the motherland and Hungarian communities in the diaspora region. Speaking at the international conference on Hungarian communities in the Hungarian diaspora region, titled “Diaspora 2025 – Revitalization,” she highlighted the importance of preserving language for maintaining identity.

With over 6,000 languages spoken in the world, only about 600 are considered safe according to optimists. Szili pointed out that 500 languages are known by only 50 people per language, making them extremely endangered. She stressed that language preservation is crucial for safeguarding culture, traditions, and overall identity.

To support Hungarian language preservation in diasporas, Szili emphasized the need for an institutional system that facilitates dialogue, shared knowledge, and cultural support for Hungarian communities. Programs such as Kőrösi Csoma Sándor, Petőfi Sándor, and Mikes Kelemen are instrumental in this effort.

The responsibility of Hungary for its fellow citizens living beyond its borders is enshrined in the Fundamental Law. Szili underscored the importance of building an institutional framework for dialogue to support national reunification and the preservation of identity among Hungarian communities.

The University of Pécs aims to establish a center for the network of Hungarians worldwide, fostering connections and promoting cultural exchange. Szili also noted a growing interest among young foreigners in exploring their Hungarian roots, learning the language, and embracing the culture of their ancestors.

The conference on Hungarian diaspora communities explores linguistic, cultural, and social phenomena, emphasizing empowerment through various disciplines such as language, music, dance, literature, and more. By drawing on the experiences of other communities, the event aims to strengthen cooperation between Carpathian Basin and diaspora communities, fostering dialogue and cross-border networking.

Overall, the conference serves as a platform for revitalization based on collaborative efforts and achievements, promoting unity and cultural exchange among Hungarian communities worldwide.
