LAST MINUTE: Istanbul Grand City Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu Arrested
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) is currently under investigation for alleged ties to terrorist organizations. The investigation, led by the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, has reached four suspects, including IMM President Ekrem Imamoglu. Additionally, seven suspects, including IMM Deputy Secretary General Mahir Polat and Sisli Mayor Resul Emrah Sahan, are also under investigation.
The investigation has uncovered information about the “city reconciliation” process, where municipal councilors and deputy mayors appointed in Istanbul were found to have connections to terrorist organizations. It was revealed that these individuals had affiliations with the terrorist organization and had recently registered with the CHP party just days before the local elections in 2024.
The suspects are accused of being members of the Democratic Congress of the Peoples (HDK), which is seen as a facade structure for the PKK/KCK terrorist organization. The investigation has linked these individuals to activities promoting the goals of the terrorist organization within the municipalities of Istanbul.
The suspects, including Ekrem Imamoglu, Ahmet Özer, Mahir Polat, Resul Emrah Şahan, and others, are alleged to have participated in activities supporting the terrorist organization. Documents seized in the investigation suggest that these individuals were involved in organizational activities to increase the influence of the terrorist organization within the municipalities.
Further evidence points to financial transactions and communications between the suspects and known members of terrorist organizations. The suspects are facing charges related to aiding and abetting a terrorist organization, and the prosecutor’s office has referred the case to the Istanbul Criminal Judiciary for further action.
