Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude towards US President Donald Trump for his efforts in achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine. Putin emphasized the need for a long-lasting peace in the region and the resolution of underlying issues causing the crisis.
Putin also claimed that the Russian army had taken complete control over the Kursk region of Ukraine, stating that Ukrainian soldiers were left with no option but to surrender or face death.
Following an eight-hour meeting with a Ukrainian delegation in Jeddah, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the next steps were in Russia’s hands. He expressed hope for a prompt positive response from Russia.
The agreement includes a 30-day temporary ceasefire mutually accepted by Ukraine and the United States, which can be extended with mutual agreement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced his acceptance of the ceasefire proposal, urging for a halt to missile, drone, and bomb attacks along the entire front line.
Moreover, the United States vowed to resume intelligence sharing and security aid to Ukraine immediately. Both countries agreed to work on a comprehensive agreement to enhance Ukraine’s critical mineral resources.
The importance of humanitarian efforts during the peace process was highlighted, with a focus on the exchange of prisoners, release of civilian detainees, and reuniting Ukrainian children who were forcibly separated.
The ongoing discussions between the two nations on the Minerals Agreement faced uncertainty after a meeting on February 28. However, efforts are being made to swiftly finalize the agreement.
