Le Pen Urges Macron to Hold Referendum to Break Political Deadlock
Far-right leader Le Pen makes statements on political situation in France
In the city of Henin-Beaumont, where the votes skewed towards the far right, former presidential candidate and RN leader Le Pen addressed members of the press regarding the current political landscape in France.
Reports from the national press indicated that the New Popular Front (NFP), the largest political alliance in parliament, will not be supporting the new government appointed by Macron, which consists of the center-rightist Michel Barnier from the republican tradition. This decision has left the executive branch in a fragile state, with the far-right contingent conditioning their support for the new government on reaching a consensus on critical issues such as immigration and security.
Le Pen emphasized the importance of maintaining democracy, even amidst the chaos that Macron has allegedly caused by calling for early general elections. She suggested that the government stalemate could potentially be resolved through a referendum on significant political matters, highlighting the need for direct decision-making power for the people.
While Le Pen did not outright reject the Barnier government, she stated that any disregard or mistreatment of the French citizens could prompt her to move for a vote of no confidence against the government. Additionally, she expressed her desire for new elections to be held within a year.
Addressing the need for a clear majority in parliament, Le Pen acknowledged the tactical cooperation between Macron and the leftists in the second round of elections to prevent a possible far-right government. She asserted that her party’s victory in securing the most votes should ideally lead to a prominent position in the government, but confirmed that they would not participate in Barnier’s new administration.
With Macron having dissolved the National Assembly and called for early general elections, the possibility of new elections taking place within a year looms. Following the first round of elections where the far-right party emerged as the frontrunner, the subsequent cooperation between Macron’s camp and the leftist alliance resulted in a fragmented parliament, marking a significant turning point in French political history.
