“Leaders from Azerbaijan, Belgium, and Armenia Meet at Trilateral Summit in Brussels”
President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has visited Brussels to meet with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, as part of his ongoing contacts with European leaders. As part of this visit, Aliyev met with Michel and Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan at the tripartite summit. This marks the fifth time that such a meeting has been held and it was focused on continuing the peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The latest summit in this format was held on August 31, 2022, which followed previous meetings in December 2021 and April 2022. The tripartite meeting, which was scheduled to be held on December 7, 2022, did not take place after Pashinyan announced that he could attend the meeting only if French President Emmanuel Macron was also present.
It is worth noting that the relationship between Azerbaijan and Armenia has been fraught with tension and conflict since the early 1990s, with both countries laying claim to the historically-contested Nagorno-Karabakh region. The recent negotiations between the two nations serves as a positive development in their relationship and reflects a willingness to work towards a peaceful resolution.
