Legal Requirement for Beach Lifeguards

The Turkish Cypriot Medical Association (KTTB) has raised awareness about the importance of implementing preventive and lifesaving measures on beaches to prevent drowning incidents. According to the KTTB Secretary General Prof. Dr. Ceyhun Dalkan, drowning is a preventable cause of death that results in 250 thousand fatalities worldwide each year.

In a written statement, Dalkan highlighted the legal obligation for beach operators and owners to take necessary safety measures as outlined in the Law on the Use and Control of Beaches. He emphasized that the Ministry of Internal Affairs should ensure the enforcement of these regulations to avoid tragedies like the 14 drowning-related deaths recorded in 2024.

Dalkan urged for the effective implementation and supervision of laws, calling for penalties for non-compliance. He stressed the importance of providing trained lifeguard support on beaches, in addition to maintaining clean and safe environments for both local residents and tourists. The KTTB is advocating for the certification of Blue Flag beaches, which require strict safety standards, including regular lifeguard training.

As preparations are made for the summer of 2025, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and local governments are urged to prioritize beach safety measures to prevent further drowning incidents. It is essential for stakeholders to work together to ensure the well-being of beachgoers and to promote a secure coastal environment for all.
