Health Crisis in Gaza: WHO Warns of Polio Outbreak

The health situation in Gaza has been dire, with the region facing intense Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023. The recent increased risk of a polio outbreak has raised major concerns, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to take immediate action.

After 7 water samples collected by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) tested positive for polio on July 16, WHO decided to send 1 million doses of polio vaccine to Gaza. Dr. Harris, a WHO representative, highlighted the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing that polio, a highly contagious disease, could cause paralysis and even lifelong disabilities.

In a statement, Dr. Harris stressed the need for urgent measures to prevent the disease from spreading further. Despite challenges posed by the ongoing conflict, WHO and its partners are working to identify high-risk individuals and ensure they receive the necessary vaccinations.

Apart from the threat of a polio outbreak, Gaza is also facing severe shortages in medical supplies and healthcare services. With 16 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza only partially operational, many patients are unable to access essential treatments, including surgeries.

Tragically, 34 people have died in Gaza due to malnutrition and thirst, reflecting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance. Dr. Harris lamented the lack of adequate medical facilities, noting that the current healthcare system is overwhelmed by the overwhelming demand for care.

Moreover, the destruction of testing laboratories in Gaza has hindered the detection of diseases, making it challenging to provide accurate medical interventions. WHO aid convoys are facing obstacles in delivering essential supplies, with 32 trucks full of medical aid waiting at the Port of El-Arish in Egypt.

Since October 7, there have been 496 attacks on health centers in Gaza, resulting in numerous casualties, including medical personnel. The situation is critical, and immediate action is needed to address the health crisis in Gaza and prevent further suffering and loss of life.
