London’s Population Aging Faster Than Other Major Cities
A recent study conducted by the “Resolution Foundation” think tank has revealed that the median age in London has increased significantly over the past decade. In 2011, the median age in London was 33.8, but it has since risen to 35.8, marking a 2-year increase. This trend stands in stark contrast to other major cities, where the median age has actually decreased slightly to 34.5 over the same period.
The study also highlighted the disparity in age demographics across different regions of the country. For instance, North Norfolk was identified as the oldest region with a median age of 55.3, while Tower Hamlets emerged as the youngest region with a median age of 30.6.
Interestingly, despite the overall decline in median age across the country, coastal and rural areas continue to experience a rapid aging trend. The median age in rural areas rose from 41.6 in 2001 to 47.4 in 2023, indicating a significant shift towards an older population.
The study attributed the aging rate of London to two main factors: a decline in birth rates and a decrease in young international immigrants following Brexit. The birth rate in London dropped from 16 per 1,000 people in the 2000s to 14 in the 2010s, a trend that was less pronounced in other parts of England and Wales.
As the population ages, the study warned that there will be increased pressure on public services, particularly in rural and coastal areas. The need for reorganization of health and social infrastructure services was emphasized to cater to the growing elderly population and dwindling birth rates.
Overall, the Resolution Foundation underscored the importance of implementing targeted policies to address the demographic changes and their long-term impacts on regional economies and public services. It is crucial to proactively plan for the aging population and ensure that adequate support systems are in place to meet the evolving needs of society.
