Hungarian Tabloid Surprises Londoners with Question About Hungarian King
A team from the Hungarian tabloid Blikk recently took to the streets of London to ask locals and tourists about the Hungarian king. The responses varied, with many unsure of the answer due to the fact that Hungary is no longer a kingdom. The question turned out to be a tricky one for most, but the responses were nevertheless surprising.
Hungary was a kingdom until 1946, but today it is a republic where the president is elected by parliament every five years. The current president, Katalin Novák, was elected in March 2022 by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s 2/3 legislative majority. She will remain in office until at least 2027, but may be re-elected for one more term.
Despite this, some Londoners and tourists were aware of Hungary’s political landscape and knew that the country does not have a king or queen. However, many more were familiar with Prime Minister Orbán, with one person even declining to share their opinion of him.
