
Lost at Sea for 95 Days: Surviving on Turtle, Birds, and Insects

Peruvian fisherman Maximo Napa Castro, who disappeared while out at sea, was miraculously found after 95 days. The 61-year-old fisherman had set out to fish from the Marcona coast in the south of Peru but lost his direction due to bad weather conditions off the coast of the Great Ocean.
After an extensive search effort that lasted for 3 months, Castro was finally rescued by Ecuadorian fishermen. During his time adrift at sea, Castro survived by drinking rainwater collected on his boat and eating creatures such as turtles, birds, and insects.
In an emotional recounting of his experience, Castro mentioned that he often thought about his family to motivate himself to hold on to life. He specifically mentioned his grandson, stating, “I had a few months of grandson, I hold on to him.”
