Lumina Park reopens in Budapest, revealing the shining past of Palatinus

Lumina Park Returns to Budapest with Stunning Lights Display
The Lumina Park in Budapest is back and better than ever, offering visitors a dazzling experience with its shimmering replica of the Chain Bridge, the underground metro made of string lights, and other iconic sights. This year, the theme of the park is based on the 150th birthday of Budapest, celebrating the city’s rich history.
The Lumina Park, located on Palatinus Beach, will be on display until March 4th. Visitors can immerse themselves in the most well-known historical phases of the city while being surrounded by enchanting lights.
The story of Lumina Park began last year when the Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Plc. partnered with the Polish company Lumina sp. z o.o. to create a winter attraction on Margret Island. The success of last year’s exhibition, which attracted over 200,000 visitors, led to the decision to bring back Lumina Park for another year.
At the ceremonial opening of the second Lumina Park, Ildikó Borosné Szűts, CEO of Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Plc., expressed her satisfaction with the park’s popularity among both residents and tourists.
Gergely Karácsony, who attended the opening event, confirmed that the Christmas lights would also be installed this year, unlike last year when there was an energy crisis.
Krzysztof Sachs, the creative director of Lumina, explained that each lightpark has a unique theme, and for Budapest, they chose to showcase the history of the city. The result is not only visually spectacular but also educational and nostalgic.
Visitors to Lumina Park can expect a journey through time. The entrance gate features a clock going backwards, symbolizing the passage into history. Highlights include a nod to Aquincum and the Romans, a garden “dancing” to operetta hits, and even an underground metro representing the Andrássy Avenue. The park also features installations of Budapest’s iconic symbols, such as the Chain Bridge and the Parliament.
The journey continues with a trip to the 1950s, featuring installations of the Golden Team, the Paul Street Boys, and period-specific cars like the Trabant and Zaporozhet. Finally, visitors arrive in present-day Budapest and even catch a glimpse of the future, where robots control everything.
One of the great features of Lumina Park is its interactivity. Visitors can board most vehicles and even play the drums.
The entire “time travel” experience takes about one and a half hours. Lumina Park is open from sundown to 9 pm every day until March 4th.
In addition to the Lumina Park, the Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Plc. has announced that the Lumina Christmas Park will also open its gates from November 10th to January 15th. The Christmas park will be held in the park of Római fürdő, creating a festive atmosphere for the holiday season.
With a three-year agreement between Budapest Spa and Thermal Baths Plc. and Lumina, residents and tourists can look forward to the return of Lumina Park in the coming years.
