Luxembourg Donates 10 Thousand Euros to Committee on Missing Persons
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has generously donated 10 thousand euros to the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP). This support, received on December 23, has increased the total financial assistance provided to the CMP from Luxembourg since 2018 to 18 thousand euros.
In a statement released by the Missing Persons Committee, it was emphasized that these donations play a crucial role in achieving the Committee’s mission of bringing closure to families who have been affected by the uncertainty surrounding missing loved ones. By identifying the remains of missing persons and returning them to their families, the CMP aims to provide solace and closure to those who have suffered for many years.
The CMP, established in 1981 by Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders under the auspices of the United Nations, is funded by the European Union. The Committee has been actively engaged in locating and exhuming missing persons since 2006, with the ultimate goal of giving them a proper burial and reuniting them with their families.
To date, a total of 1051 missing Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots have been identified and laid to rest, thanks to the efforts of the CMP. However, the Committee emphasizes the importance of continued donor support to sustain this bi-communal project and bring closure to more families in need.
The generous donation from Luxembourg is a testament to the international community’s commitment to supporting the CMP’s vital work and bringing resolution to the long-standing issue of missing persons in Cyprus.
