“Major overhaul of parking system at Budapest’s bustling railway station”

Starting in July, drivers will need to pay for parking in the P+R car parks located near Kelenföld railway station in Budapest. According to Budapest Közút Zrt., the company responsible for operating the car parks, the spaces will cost HUF 350 (EUR 0.94) per parking spot between 6 AM and 10 PM every day. The car parks were previously free of charge.

Budapest Közút Zrt. stated that the parking tariff is a result of the EU funds received during the investment in metro line M4. The funds stipulated that the 1,453 parking spots in the Őrmező P1, P2, and Etele Square P1, P2 car parks would be free of charge for five years. However, this period expired on November 17, 2022.

The company intends to finalise the details of the payment and camera surveillance system by the summer. Additionally, the tariff will apply to public holidays and weekends.

Furthermore, Budapest Közút Zrt. explained that by making the P+R car parks paid and guarded, they hope to restore their real function. They hope that the move will discourage long-term car storage, particularly overnight when it will be more expensive, at HUF 105 (EUR 0.28) per hour.

The company also announced that from July, night-time charging will be introduced in the other P+R car parks in Budapest owned by the capital and currently operated by Budapest Közút including Köki Terminal P+R, Kőbánya-Kispest P+R, Hűvösvölgy P1 P+ R, Örs vezért Square P+R, Pillangó Street P+R, and Újpest-Városkapu P+R.
