Man who killed his ex-wife receives aggravated life sentence.
A man has been sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the deliberate killing of his ex-wife in Turkey. The verdict was announced following a decision hearing at the İzmir 12th High Criminal Court, attended by the defendant and representatives of the women’s association. The accused, YP, had no last words and left the decision to the court. The public prosecutor had recommended that YP be given aggravated life imprisonment prior to the hearing. The court board also stated that no reductions in the sentence would be applied due to previous assault and injury cases against the deceased, Remziye Tüysüz.
Tüysüz’s body was found in the house of her divorced husband in the Bornova district of Izmir on April 14, 2022. YP was arrested after confessing to the crime, while his two brothers, father, and grandmother were initially detained but later released. Tüysüz’s body was buried in her hometown in the Çermik district of Diyarbakır. The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had prepared the indictment, requesting aggravated life imprisonment for YP for deliberate killing.
The case has received attention from women’s associations in Turkey, who are advocating for stronger protections for women against domestic violence. The verdict is a positive step towards holding perpetrators of domestic violence accountable for their actions and sending a message that such violence will not be tolerated.
