Images of the iconic Colosseum in Rome defaced by a tourist, who engraved his and his fiancée’s name on the walls of the historical structure, have sparked outrage in Italy. The images, which were circulated on social media, drew sharp criticism from the public.
Colosseum Archaeological Park Area officials have filed a criminal complaint with the Italian gendarmerie, urging them to identify and locate the tourist responsible for the vandalism. The incident is believed to have occurred last Friday when the tourist used a key to carve the message “Ivan + Hayley 23/6/23” onto the walls.

Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano expressed his strong disapproval of the act in a written statement, calling it “a very serious, despicable, and rude act.” Sangiuliano emphasized the importance of preserving historical sites like the Colosseum and stated his hope for the responsible individual to be identified and punished accordingly.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri also condemned the vandalism, describing it as an “uncivilized and senseless act” that dishonors Rome and its status as a World Heritage Site. Gualtieri expressed his hope for the offender to face appropriate consequences for their actions.
