March of the Living in Budapest: This Sunday

The March of the Living, an annual event commemorating the victims of the Holocaust, will be taking place in Budapest on Sunday. Gábor Gordon, the head of the board of the March of the Living Foundation, announced at a press conference that the event will begin with the inauguration of a memorial plaque at the Dohány Street synagogue to mark the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust. The march will then commence at 3 PM.
This year’s March of the Living will feature nearly 100 Holocaust survivors who will be transported by electric cars as they join the march towards the Keleti railway station. In addition to honoring the victims of the Holocaust, the event will also pay tribute to those who lost their lives in last year’s terrorist attack in Israel on 7 October.
Vince Szalay-Bobrovniczky, the deputy state secretary in charge of civil and social relations, acknowledged the government’s recognition of the atrocities committed during the Holocaust and the current responsibilities to ensure such events never happen again. He highlighted the government’s support for the Holocaust 80 memorial year as a demonstration of their commitment to remembering and honoring the victims.
The 20th March of the Living event in Budapest is expected to be a solemn yet powerful occasion, bringing together survivors, government officials, and members of the community to reflect on the horrors of the past and ensure that the memory of the Holocaust is never forgotten.
