“Married and Voting: Can You Keep Your Identity?” – YSK Provides Last Minute Update on Turkey’s Election Guidelines

Voters in Turkey can use a variety of official documents to cast their vote in the upcoming elections on May 14. According to article 27 of circular numbered 135, voters can bring their Republic of Turkey identity number, identity card, temporary identity document, passport, marriage certificate, military service documents, and other official IDs to the polls. Additionally, voters can use their driver’s license, professional identity card given to judges and prosecutors, lawyer and notary IDs, and military identity card to cast their vote by stating their voter registration number. Even those with a temporary identity document can use it to vote.
For those who have recently gotten married, they can also vote by presenting a marriage certificate. The Turkish government is committed to making the voting process as accessible as possible to all eligible voters, and providing a range of acceptable IDs is part of that effort. As the elections approach, voters should ensure that they have the proper documentation with them when going to the polls, in order to have their voices heard.
