Martyrs’ Commemoration Program Held at Nicosia Atatürk Cultural Center for 21 December National Struggle and Martyrs’ Week

The Martyrs’ Commemoration Program was held at the Nicosia Atatürk Cultural Center as part of the 21 December National Struggle and Martyrs’ Week. The ceremony began with a moment of silence and the National Anthem.

Celal Bayar, President of the Cyprus TMT Mujahideen Association, spoke about the atrocities committed by the Greek Cypriot and Greek sides against the Turkish Cypriots in line with the Akritas Plan. He emphasized that the Turkish Cypriots did not give in to the enemy despite limited resources and continued their resistance until the Happy Peace Operation of 20 July 1974.

Gürsel Benanda, President of the Martyr Families and Disabled Veterans Association, highlighted the national awakening that began on December 21 with the determination and unity of the Turkish Cypriots. He stressed the importance of keeping the spirit of struggle alive for future generations.

President Ersin Tatar emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle is for independence and sovereignty. He noted the ongoing attempts to assimilate Turkish Cypriots and sever their ties with Turkey based on a federal agreement. Tatar underscored the absolute necessity of sovereignty for future generations to live independently and stated that a 2-state agreement is crucial for Turkish Cypriots.

The commemorative program featured an oratorio prepared by students from Atatürk Vocational High School. The event served as a tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the national struggle and a reminder of the ongoing fight for freedom and independence. President Tatar highlighted the importance of protecting the TRNC and emphasized the role of Turkey as a deterrent in safeguarding the region.
