Gas explosion shakes residents in Tapolca, Hungary
Last night, a suspected gas explosion rocked an apartment on the third floor of a residential building in Kazinczy Square, Tapolca. The National Directorate General for Disaster Management confirmed that the blast caused the balcony to collapse, leading to a small fire in the kitchen of the apartment.
Emergency services from nearby towns, including Ajka, Keszthely, Badacsonytomaj, and the local Tapolca fire brigade, rushed to the scene. The Veszprém County Disaster Operations Unit also provided assistance. Fortunately, an off-duty firefighter was able to quickly extinguish the fire before it could spread further. However, the affected wing of the building had to be evacuated, with 198 residents forced to leave their homes.
Following the explosion, structural engineers were called in to assess the safety of the building. Sadly, this incident is not an isolated one. Earlier this year, in May, another gas explosion occurred in a different apartment in the same Y-building complex. The explosion on the sixth floor caused one person to be hospitalized and led to the evacuation of 102 apartments in the building.
Residents in the area are understandably shaken by these events, with many expressing concerns about the safety of the aging buildings. Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosions and working to ensure the well-being of all residents in the area.
