Burak Maviş Advocates for Educational Equity at ETUCE Meeting in Brussels
Burak Maviş, the Secretary General of the Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Union (KTÖS) and the Cyprus representative for the European Committee of Educational Unions (ETUCE), recently participated in a significant meeting held in Brussels. The gathering highlighted crucial discussions regarding the future of educational policies, particularly in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
In a statement released by KTÖS, Maviş emphasized the ongoing struggle against the disciplinary charter imposed on trade unions and underscored the need for international solidarity in this endeavor. During his time in Brussels, he met with key figures from ETUCE, including Director Jelmer Evers, President John Macgabhann, Vice President Cuqui Vera Belmonte, and Julien Farges. These interactions aimed to strengthen networks and bolster support for educational unions across Europe.
Maviş also provided insights into the current educational policies in the TRNC, expressing concern about initiatives that promote religious clothing practices for female students. He argued that such measures fail to incorporate democratic mechanisms and contradict the rights of children, raising significant questions about inclusivity in education.
During the meeting, Maviş shared details about a joint declaration supported by over 75 political parties, trade unions, and non-governmental organizations. This collective effort demonstrates a unified front advocating for the teachers’ unions and addressing the challenges faced in the education sector.
Maviş called upon ETUCE for further support, particularly in amplifying the voice of teachers’ unions in public discourse. He urged the organization to bring the issues facing educators in the TRNC to the attention of European and international institutions, highlighting the importance of monitoring and reporting mechanisms that can lead to more effective advocacy.
