
Mediterranean Fishermen Begin Fishing Season too

The fishing season in Mersin has officially begun, bringing excitement and hope to the local community. With a 321-kilometer coastline on the Mediterranean, Mersin is known for its thriving fishing industry, providing a significant income for many residents.
Preparations have been completed for 441 boats from 7 fishing shelters in Mersin, as the new season kicks off. A special program was organized for the season opening at Erdemli Fishing Shelter, where Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan, Erdemli Mayor Mustafa Kara, and other protocol members served fish and bread to celebrate the occasion.
The boats were sent off to the open sea after prayers and well wishes, with Governor Pehlivan signaling the start of the season by saying “Vira Bismillah” over the radio. Families bid farewell to their loved ones, as children, wives, and mothers joined in the send-off.
Governor Pehlivan highlighted Turkey’s rank as the 5th largest fish producer in the world, with Mersin alone producing around 40 thousand tons of fish annually. He emphasized the importance of sustainable fishing practices to ensure the future availability of fish for generations to come.
Local residents, like Rabia Taş and Sultan Aydın, shared their excitement for the new season, expressing their support for their family members who are fishermen. As a family tradition, fishing plays a significant role in their lives, and they look forward to a successful and fruitful season ahead.
