Meet Bilge Yılmaz: İYİ Party Economic Policies Chairman
Turkish economist, engineer, physicist, academician, and politician Bilge Yılmaz has had an impressive journey that has led him to various fields of expertise. Born in 1968 in Balıkesir, Yılmaz comes from a family with a diverse background – his father was a mathematics teacher and his mother was a painter and administrator at the Ministry of Culture. Growing up, he lived in different cities across Turkey due to his parents’ professions.
Yılmaz’s educational path has been equally diverse. He started his primary education in Ankara and later moved to Istanbul, where he completed his primary schooling. His journey continued at Kadıköy Anatolian High School and Nişantaşı Anatolian High School for his high school education. He then pursued a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Boğaziçi University, where he also double-majored in physics, earning titles as an engineer and physicist upon graduation in 1991.
It was during his university years that Yılmaz’s interest in economics blossomed, thanks to the influence of his mentor Murat Sertel. This led him to pursue further studies in economics at Princeton University in the United States, obtaining his master’s degree in 1994 and completing his doctorate in 2000.
Yılmaz’s professional journey took an unexpected turn when he delved into politics. Prior to joining the İYİ Party, he was involved in the Yurt Party before making the decision to enter politics during a trip to Turkey in April 2021. He soon became an advisor to İYİ Party Chairman Meral Akşener and later assumed the role of Chairman of İYİ Party Economic Policies in December 2021.
