Mersin Produces 100 Tons of Pollen at 300 Liras per Kilo

Pollen Production in Turkey Increases During Pandemic
Pollen production in Mersin, Turkey has increased during the pandemic and has found buyers from European countries as well as domestically. According to the Mersin Beekeeping Association President, Adem Kurt, about 100 tons of pollen are produced annually in the region.
Beekeeping is an important source of income in the city, where the pollen, which weighs roughly 300 liras, is obtained through a grueling process. The use of modern and pollen-trapped hives in beekeeping has increased pollen production. Besides honey and royal jelly, the interest in pollen has also increased recently.
Fazilet Tipi, a beekeeper at Esenpınar Neighborhood, noted that due to the rainy weather, the pollen harvest has increased by 50% this year. The highest demand for pollen comes from European countries such as Germany, England and France.
The pollen production period starts from the first week of May and lasts until the last week of May. Beekeepers collect around 15 kilos of pollen from 150 hives daily. The pollen is frozen and cleaned before being packed and delivered to the consumers. The quality of the pollen is high due to the region’s rich flowers, making it highly valuable at 300 liras per kilo.
In conclusion, the pandemic increased the demand for pollen, providing a source of income for beekeepers in Turkey. The harvesting and selling of pollen, honey, and royal jelly contribute to the country’s economy while also providing consumers with natural and healthy products.
