Meta Tests Facial Recognition to Spot Fake Ads with Celebrity Images

Meta introduces optional facial recognition technology to combat fake advertisements featuring celebrities
Meta has recently announced a new initiative aimed at combating fake advertisements that feature photos of celebrities on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. In a statement released by the company, it was revealed that Meta will be utilizing optional facial recognition technology as part of its efforts.
The statement explained that the facial recognition technology has been tested with the profiles of select celebrities on Facebook and Instagram. Users who wish to utilize this technology will be required to have an account on both platforms and upload a video in which their faces are clearly visible. This video will then be compared to any advertisements suspected to be fake, which may contain images or videos of celebrities.
If the technology detects that an advertisement is indeed fake, featuring photos or videos of celebrities without permission, it can be promptly blocked. Additionally, users have the freedom to discontinue using facial recognition technology at any time.
This new approach comes after Meta’s decision in November 2021 to shut down the facial recognition system on Facebook amidst growing social concerns. The company also announced that the facial scanning data of over one billion users would be deleted as part of these changes.
With the introduction of optional facial recognition technology, Meta hopes to provide users with an additional layer of protection against fake advertisements that exploit images of celebrities. This move reinforces the company’s commitment to creating a safer and more secure online environment for all users.
