Microsoft Introduces “GreenSKUs” to Reduce Environmental Impact
In an effort to combat its negative environmental impact, Microsoft has launched the concept of “green components” known as GreenSKUs. This initiative focuses on the reuse of decommissioned server components to promote sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.
The increasing energy consumption in cloud computing, currently responsible for around 3% of global consumption, is a growing concern. If left unchecked, it could contribute up to 20% of carbon emissions by 2030. By implementing the GreenSKUs approach, Microsoft aims to reduce these emissions by 8%.
To achieve this goal, Microsoft has teamed up with scientists from the University of Washington and Carnegie Mellon University. Together, they are working on innovative methods to extend the lifespan of server components like RAM modules and solid-state drives beyond the typical three to five years.
The selection process for reused server components involves strict criteria based on performance and energy efficiency levels. Additionally, appropriate computing workloads are identified for these “secondary” servers to ensure optimal functionality from a software standpoint.
This collaborative effort between Microsoft and leading research institutions signifies a significant step towards a more sustainable future in the tech industry. By adopting GreenSKUs, companies can contribute to reducing their environmental footprint and fostering a greener, more eco-friendly approach to technology.
