Minimum Wage Commission Holds Meeting Without Employer Attendance

The Minimum Wage Determination Commission has held its second meeting to set the third minimum wage of the year. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, attended by Minister Sadık Gardiyanoğlu, President of the Federation of Free Trade Unions (Hür-İş) Ahmet Serdaroğlu representing the workers, and other officials. However, the representative of the Turkish Cypriot Employers Union, representing the employer side, was notably absent.

Minister Gardiyanoğlu expressed the government’s commitment to determining a fair and maximum figure for the minimum wage. On the other hand, Employers’ Union President Hasan Sungur’s absence was attributed to a lack of technical data and objective economic evaluation within the Commission meetings.

With the approval of the state and workers, the minimum wage in the TRNC will be set at 29,516 net and 33,926 gross TL starting from May 1, 2024. This decision comes after a series of deliberations and discussions within the Commission, reflecting the diverse perspectives and challenges faced in setting the minimum wage in the country.
